Free Movie: Mission to Lars

Tuesday, October 16, a special film will be screened at Sacred Grounds at 6:00 PM. (Yes, we'll be open for this very special event).

William Spicer, New York filmmaker from London, will be present at the screening of his movie, Mission to Lars. The movie is the story of Will's (Will Spicer, not Will Ponder) brother Tom, a British man whose life’s dream is to meet Lars Ulrich, Metallica’s drummer. But Tom has Fragile X Syndrome, the world’s most common cause of genetically-inherited intellectual disability. And it comes along with behavioral challenges, including anxiety. Tom shares his anxiety throughout the film, leaving the audience wondering if his dream will ever come true. As to why he made this very personal movie Spicer said, “I wanted to do something with my brother,” Spicer explained, “and I suppose I wanted to show people what my brother was really like. I wanted to tell Tom’s story.”

Mary Lee Shelton, who is responsible for bringing the movie and Spicer to Ruidoso, is mother to a 27-year-old man with Fragile X Syndrome. She encourages everyone to come see the movie. "It's entertaining, touching and moving for all audiences," she said. "Special education teachers in particular should see it."

The screening will include 5-minute talks from Dr. Randi Hagerman, renown Fragile X specialist, and Dr. Marcia Braden, special education teacher and psychologist who is a specialist in how Fragile X individuals learn.
